AQHA Youth

My favourite photos from the AQHA Youth camp at the Taupo Western Riding grounds. I am a huge fan of the quarter horse breed & I love seeing young people getting involved in showing & training with their own AQHA's. Quarter horses are such a versatile breed, with so much heart & ability, a sound mind & not to mention they are gorgeous!  Appreciation to Kerrin & Sheila for organising this event & Dan Carlisle for providing excellent training for these young adults....

Why you should include headshots

Engagement is that marvellous thing we are all chasing online and showing your face is proven to increase your engagement In a study of 1.1mil photos on Instagram, photos of faces got 38% more likely to get a double tap and 32% more likely to get comments than photos without faces. Headshots bring a human element to a brand which increases trust, reliability & relatability. Not only are they fantastic for increasing engagement, I am a big believer in having professional headshots ...

My Approach To Equine Product Photography

Research, Plan, Set-up & Capture.  Notice something about that philosophy? It is heavily focussed on what goes on before I even pick up the camera. I like to know everything I can about a brand before I shoot it so that I can capture the brands values and point of difference. There are different photographic techniques that I employ to convey different emotions and appeal to different audiences. Sound silly? Let me break it down. ...

My Canadian Sisters

Each with their own personality & eccentricities but all of them LOVE horses and horses are a huge part of their lives. My time in Canada would have been a little less funny & weird without these guys. Teaching them to ride, going out for trail rides & processing cattle on the ranch together are all memories I will cherish forever. ...

MAYA & KOWHAI

Maya has achieved some incredible liberty training with her gelding Kowhai. It's so inspiring to watch any liberty work, I think anyone who's watched Amy from Heartland with Spartan will understand my excitement photographing Maya & Kowhai. All of the hours that they've spent learning each other have paid off. ...

ABI & MONTY

Redhead team - look out! I am the only brunette out of a family of 5 redheads, so I've always been envious of red locks. These two are matched perfectly, and not just their manes. Abi & Monty love showjumping & pony club. ...

NATASHA & STORM

Hanging out in the field with your best friend... lazing bareback while they graze... Feeling their warm breath on you... The bond shared between a girl and her horse has many memories attached with it. It's a favourite part of my job isolating those moments and capturing them so they have a place in the physical world forever. ...

SECRET FALLS CLYDESDALE STUD

They grow up so fast - and when they are Clydesdales it won't be long until they are towering over everyone! It was a special evening spent with these lovely animals - the hardest part was getting enough distance to get them focussed, they were so intent on coming over for cuddles & scratches. The foals at Secret Falls Stud will grow to be used traditionally as sled pullers in shows & for the public. ...

FLORALS, FOALS & FARM-LIFE

Bex & Mike have an idyllic spot in Katikati, Bay of Plenty where they hang out with their beautiful herd of clicker trained animals including horses, sheep & even chickens! Bex from Positively Together Horsemanship has a new addition to her clicker trained herd - Firefly, a drop-dead-gorgeous gypsy cob foal. When Firefly grows some more she will demonstrate to thousands of people in NZ and overseas the incredible things that clicker training can do for human & animal partnership. Scroll dow...

CAMBRIDGE MOTHER, DAUGHTER & HORSE

Knowing Janelle from my days of horse training - it was a real trip down memory lane to photograph her with her beloved horse, Barbie.  Non horsey people may not understand the bond a girl can have with such a huge beast but I definitely do.. my own mare, Molly is undeniably the strongest bond I have ever had with any other animal … coming pretty close to my human relationships too. Janelle has always had such a loving nature and Motherhood looks stunning on her. This maternity/famil...

ANDERSON FAMILY

I asked a friend recently "what values would you like your child to go into adulthood with?' Her answers were: Social skills - the ability to make friends easily and read people well. Curiosity - which facilitates adventure, an adventurous lifestyle leads to a satisfying life.Kindness - to show kindness not only to friends and loved ones but to people who may not seem of immediate benefit.. the man on the end of the phone who is performing his job to the best of his abilities, the woman in front...

TRAVEL : CANADA PART II

I've already shared the more spectacular moments of our trip - the mountains of Banff and the fast paced rodeo events my favourite part of Canada was just being at home on the ranch, spending time with people I loved. ...

7K RANCH, CANADA

The horses who keep this ranch running deserve their own blog post so here it is! They were probably my favourite part of Canada so I may be biased but I think these guys are stunning! They definitely do their jobs well - they will chase Angus bulls twice their size around a 300 acre pasture, they will rope a calf in an arena, they will drag a calf up for branding, and take the grandkids for a pony ride all in a days work. They may be hardworking gentlemen but they are not too proud to take an a...

TRAVEL : CANADA PART I

My trip to Canada was packed FULL of amazing experiences and memories so I thought I would compile them into a few seperate blogs because we had such varied activities. It started out with staying on a ranch with friends where we lived as true blue Canadians. For the last leg of our trip we did the whole tourist thing and trundled around the mountains which were freakin amazing!  As a portrait photographer I had an interesting time taking so many landscape photos. I've always looked at land...

PREPARING YOUR PROPERTY FOR EQUINE PORTRAITS

If you have booked an equine photoshoot with me then yay!!! I’m super stoked to be taking photos for you and I’m gonna try my hardest to make the perfect portraits for you but it’s more than likely that we will be taking the photos at your place or wherever the horse is grazing which means I will be showing up with little to no idea of what I have to work with in terms of lighting and backgrounds. There are a few ways you can help me out so that I can prepare myself and my camera to get th...

TRAVEL JOURNAL : CANADA PART III

I’m not much into showing. Jodhpurs look ridiculous on me and my horse is not fancy enough to parade around a ring winning ribbons. I gave it a go in my younger days but it never really fitted with me so when I discovered rodeo and roping - where the clock is your judge - it fit me like a glove. I enjoy the down to earth people who are always there to give you a pointer or two and the horses seem love it. My mare Molly is in her element when she’s chasing cows, it’s bred into her and she j...

TRAVEL : CANADIAN RANCHING

Going over to Canada was like going back in time and forward in time all at once. Things have progressed so much in the world - especially in our little New Zealand - but is it all for the better? I'm not convinced. The people in Canada seemed to have their priorities straight by doing most things the 'old school' traditional way.  "If you want to get it done in a hurry - this ain't the way to do it, but if you wanna have fun then you've come to the right place" - was what I was told when w...

KERRYANNE EQUINE PORTRAITS

BB was the epitome of a gentleman in the horse world. This guy had been in Kerryanne life on and off for 8 years. Although she had sold him twice, he would keep coming back through no fault of his own. He was just meant to be with Kerryanne, she was the best person to care for him. BB (short for Bilbo Baggins, the most unmatched name for this tall, handsome steed) was the sort of horse you could rely on for a relaxing ride, he was always looking after his rider. Unfortunately, it was discove...
